Learning the tools and techniques to effectively manage a virtual team is less than half of the battle. The key is then to look at, and really understand, how you can implement those tools and techniques in your own particular situation.

We make sure that you leave us with an action plan so that you are clear on how you will managing your remote team of virtual workers.

Getting remote meetings right is not simple. Ensuring that everyone is engaged and heard needs practice.

There are a number of techniques that we look at on this managing virtual teams training course, they include

  1. Make sure that everyone is participating. Frequently go round the group and ask people directly for their opinions.
  2. Try to limit numbers. Just as with physical meetings the more people you have the less you’ll get from each individual. Keep the meeting to those people that NEED to be in the room.
  3. Make sure that you are comfortable with the software in advance. If you’re trying to figure out the software you won’t be able to focus on managing the meeting.
  4. Have a clear set of ground rules that everyone understands. For example, it’s a great idea for everyone to mute themselves unless they are speaking to avoid distracting background noise.

Managing a remote team presents a whole new set of challenges when compared to managing a team face-to-face.

Examples of these are:

  1. Virtual teams can find it very difficult to communicate and collaborate effectively if they are not shown how.
  2. Remote team members often do not feel ‘part of the team’ given a lack of physical contact and struggle for motivation.
  3. Remote managers can find it very difficult to measure and manage team performance in a distributed team.

This course focuses on how to set up your virtual team to minimise these issues.
